Preserving Mougins, today and tomorrow

Between heritage, nature and art of living, Mougins is committed to tourism that is more respectful of its environment and its inhabitants. On a daily basis, the commune works to preserve its landscapes, promote short supply chains and encourage more sustainable practices, in order to offer visitors an authentic, harmonious and forward-looking experience.

Exceptional natural spaces

Mougins, nicknamed the “garden city”, has almost 50% of green spaces. Its territory is endowed with remarkable natural environments, such as the Etang de Fontmerle and the Parc Départemental de la Valmasque.

VALMASQUE DEPARTMENTAL PARK

Created and managed by the Alpes-Maritimes department, the Valmasque park is a formidable green lung covering some 500 hectares in the communes of Valbonne and Mougins. Between forests, paths and a freshwater pond, this park with its rich biodiversity offers visitors an unspoilt haven for relaxation, sport and nature escapades.

In the past, the Valmasque lands were exploited for their resources: clay quarries supplied the potters of Vallauris, while lime kilns contributed to the construction of the surrounding villages. This intensive exploitation left its mark: by the mid-twentieth century, the massif had become nothing more than arid scrubland.

Fortunately, thanks to reforestation policies, the Valmasque today has regained all its former natural wealth: a rich and diverse Mediterranean forest, with a mix of Aleppo pines, holm oaks, cork oaks, flowering ashes, cherry trees and shrubs such as myrtle or pistachio lentisque. To make the most of it, visitors have a number of signposted trails to observe the flora and fauna and wander over hills, meadows and valleys, as well as playgrounds and several sports courses. L’ÉTANG DE FONTMERLE

Bordered by twelve hectares of meadows, the Etang de Fontmerle is remarkable both for its scenic beauty and for the astonishing richness of its flora and fauna. Among reeds, rushes and irises, it’s home to Europe’s largest colony of sacred lotuses, the nelumbo nucifera, originally from Asia. Their flowers can reach 25 cm in diameter and their leaves up to a metre high!
The seeds themselves contain a fruit shaped like a watering can rose. Every year between June and mid-July, the enchanting spectacle of their blooms attracts thousands of visitors and enthusiasts.
Another special feature, the thirty-six bald cypresses (taxodium distichum) or swamp cypresses that surround the pond. These deciduous conifers are native to Florida and the marshes near the Gulf of Mexico.
What’s more, depending on the season, Fontmerle pond is home to up to 70 species of birds! Some nest here all year round, such as mallards, coots, little grebes, moorhens

Other species arrive with spring, such as the egrets and herons. The pond also attracts rare species such as the least bittern or the turdoid warbler, and the the European pond terrapinan endangered turtle. The site is also home to eels, carp and numerous amphibians.

Committed, sustainable tourism

THE RESPONSIBLE TRAVELER CHARTER

To encourage visitors and employees alike to adopt eco-responsible behavior, the Mougins Tourist Office has drawn up and communicated a sustainable tourism charter. A philosophy perfectly compatible with pleasure and discovery!

A DESTINATION WITH THE “ACCUEIL VÉLO” LABEL

Since May 2025, Mougins Tourist Office has held the “Accueil Vélo” label. This national label guarantees the presence of a cycle route less than 5 km away, as well as a high-quality welcome and services for cycle tourists. In Mougins, in addition to the 40 km of cycle paths and lanes in the commune, the tourist office has set up a number of initiatives to welcome visitors by bike and encourage soft mobility: bike racks, technical kit, detailed maps and itineraries…

COMMITMENTS OF THE TOURIST OFFICE

The Mougins Tourist Office has implemented a sustainable development strategy in line with the town’s ambitions in terms of ecological transition and preserving the quality of life in Mougins.

Obtaining Category 1 classification and the Marque Qualité Tourisme™ in 2021, followed by the “Accueil Vélo” label in 2025,
testifies to a quality approach already embedded in the Tourist Office’s culture.
In this continuity, the objective of obtaining the “Destination d’Excellence” label led to the launch, in 2026, of a
RSE / RSO approach aimed at structuring and reinforcing the environmental, social and societal commitments of the
de Mougins Tourist Office, in the service of the territory, visitors and local players.

This commitment is set out in a declaration accessible to all our employees and customers.

A COMMITTED, PROTECTED REGION

For many years now, the commune of Mougins has been making its employees and residents aware of the importance of protecting the environment. The municipality is itself committed to these issues through major projects in a variety of fields: energy savings, ecomobility, sustainable food (notably with the creation of a communal farm), recycling, protection of biodiversity…

OF TOURISM PLAYERS INVOLVED

A number of establishments carry out CSR initiatives on a daily basis. Restaurants, for example, are often keen to promote seasonal produce and short supply chains… Hotels are not to be outdone. Some have even earned valuable labels, such as La Lune de Mougins, which holds La Clé verte (tourist establishments committed to a rigorous environmental approach) as well as the the Empl’itude CSR label (enabling companies to structure and improve their HR management, while affirming their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices).
