The Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur church
In the heart of the village since the 11th century
In the heart of the old village of Mougins, the church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur was built in three stages.
The sacristy dates back to the 11th century, and the building was extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. Once inside the church, you can admire the gilded cardboard statues of Saint Joseph and Saint Mary, created by the talents of the Grasse school in the 18th century. Also worth seeing are a gilded and polychrome wooden crucifix, the font and the baptismal font, which date from the same period. The altar stone in the choir was carved in the 11th century.
The church organ is also worth a visit. Built in 1995, it was restored in 2024. This is a reproduction of an 18th-century baroque organ of German inspiration. Every autumn, an organ festival is held in the church to showcase its remarkable sound.
Outside, in the Place des Amis next to the church, discover the work of sculptor Carla Lavatelli (1995). It consists of a bench where you can sit and a fountain running alongside the adjacent alleyway, which lets out a gentle sound of trickling water.
