Saint-Barthélémy
The protective chapel.
History says that the Saint-Barthélemy chapel, dating from the 10th century, was built to calm the fears of the population on the eve of the year 1000.
It thus provided divine protection against the apocalypse predicted for the new millennium.
Nestled between pine and cypress trees, the chapel is intriguing for its octagonal shape, particularly unusual for a religious building, with its semi-circular apse, porch door and small bell tower atop the roof.
Its layout is a legacy from the martyrdom of primitive Christianity, with its religious buildings constructed to bear witness to Christian faith and sometimes house the tomb of a martyr.
The chapel has been listed as a historic monument since December 22, 1941.
